The small Victorian house is designed specifically to have larger gathering areas and open spaces while maintaining some privacy.

From Jones Haydu:

With a small Victorian on a steep site, the owners wished to open and enlarge the main gathering spaces, create usable exterior spaces, and provide a strong connection to the outdoors. The intimate addition allows for a new courtyard that connects to the main living areas, and provides a roof deck.

A wall dividing the kitchen and dining room was removed and a new island provides formal definition to the newly opened spaces. Three new retaining walls allow for new exterior areas accessible from both levels of the house.
